The Barn School | Step by Step Early Learning Center

Mountain Construction is proud to announce the completion of The Barn School, a 13,324-square-foot early learning center in Puyallup designed to serve children from birth to five years old. Inspired by Scandinavian models of early childhood development, the facility emphasizes free play, exploration, and strong connections to the natural environment.

This project continues our longstanding partnership with Step By Step. After building both the Farm 12 and Fika facilities, we were honored to return as General Contractor for their newest development. At the January 23, 2026 ribbon cutting ceremony, Founder and CEO Krista Linden shared, “Mountain Construction has been the contractor for each of the three projects and has been a delight to work with.” Long-term partnerships like this are built on trust, collaboration, and shared vision, and The Barn School reflects all three.

As General Contractor, Mountain led overall project coordination, managing subcontractors, schedule, budget, and design collaboration. In addition, our team self-performed the concrete foundations, steel fabrication and installation, doors and hardware, and trim carpentry. Working closely with the owner and design team, we constructed a highly detailed facility requiring disciplined coordination, technical precision, and craftsmanship at every stage.

A defining feature of The Barn School is its seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces. Each classroom includes large overhead doors that open directly to the outdoors, encouraging children to move freely between environments. Inside, vaulted ceilings and exposed steel trusses create an open, light-filled atmosphere. The welcoming lobby features a custom “bird nest” reception desk and water feature, reinforcing the building’s nature-inspired character from the moment families arrive.

Outdoor areas were carefully considered, incorporating paver pathways, decorative lighting, varied tree species, child-friendly plantings, logs, and large rocks that invite exploration. The project included distinctive detailing not typical of conventional builds, and strong collaboration with the design team and ownership helped bring those elements together successfully.

What stands out most is the impact. Seeing the excitement of the owners, staff, and children stepping into the completed space was a meaningful reminder of why we build. Projects like this reinforce our commitment to delivering complex, thoughtfully constructed spaces that translate our clients’ goals into lasting results.
